Thank you for visiting our web site. Our work is focused in the areas of Health, Education and Development in underserved Tanzania communities. Through the partnership support of local and international donors, our current mandate includes:

SHED Foundation will continue to:

• Open its doors for partnership agreements; projects; and opportunities designed to provide Health, Education, and Development to targeted underserved villages/communities in Tanzania; and
• Enter into any arrangement with any person, group or association carrying on, or engaging in the support and promotion of any of the objectives contained in the SHED Foundation's Memorandum of Association

What We Do

Health

We are providingto the following health programs to the underserved villages surrounding the village of Shirati, Tanzania:

• Village Outpatient Care in several previously underserved villages in Rorya District
• A  regional referral facility for treatment of Burkitt’s Lymphoma, a childhood cancer common in Tanzania facility;
• Medical Research on Burkitt’s Lymphoma through EMBLEM Study
• Hosting of visiting medical students, doctors in training, and their professors, who partner with us (SHED Foundation) to analyze village health issues and to educate patients and improve health of underserved Tanzania communities.

 Education

•  Education grants to health care workers
• Assistance in basic education at secondary school level
• Feeding programs at several primary schools
• Work to educate patients and improve village health through village health committees
• Facilitate/host Medical School Programs. Such programs  may include clinical and public health work in rural villages. (See also Global Health Partnership Program.)

Global Health Partnership Program

This program includes hosting of visiting medical students, doctors in training, and their professors, who will partner with us (SHED Foundation) to analyze village health issues and work to educate patients and most of all improve village health of undersaved Tanzania communities.

Development

• Building of Health Center in Roche Village in partnership with VLOP (ongoing)
• Building of Health Center in Sota Village in partnership with BLFA (ongoing)
• Building of primary classrooms in Burere Village  in partnership with Engineers Without Borders, University of Cincinnati Student Chapter (ongoing)
• Drilling of wells in Shirati (accomplished), Roche (accomplished) and Nyambogo (planned) Villages in partnership with VLOP and private donors

ELECTIVE OPPORTUNITIES FOR MEDICAL AND NURSING STUDENTS AND RESIDENTS IN EAST AFRICA

This is a 3 to 6-weeks program offered by the University of Southern California, School of Medicine (USC) under the auspices of SHED Foundation in rural Tanzania villages; and Shirati Health, Education and Development Foundation, US Branch.

• Location: The site - Sota community - is 9 hours by road from Nairobi - on the shore of Lake Victoria, Shirati, Tanzania.
• Acceptance to the program: Generally contingent on a phone interview, and is subject to space availability.
• The experience may include, clinic work and public health work.
• Several medical students and residents have already participated. About $20-$30/day  will be charged for room and board (Note: this rate may change slightly.)
• The program is hosted by Dr. Esther Lehman Kawira, a Diplomate of the American Board of Family Medicine who has a faculty appointment at the University of Southern California, School of Medicine. She has been in Tanzania for over 23 years and speaks Swahili.
